Experiences at a psychotherapeutic counselling agency for students—a 'psychic main dressingstation' of the student protest movement—are the basis for the author's attempt to make us aware that certain institutional conditions (the neurosogenic climate at universities), international political controversies (e.g. the May revolt in Paris or the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968) as well as collective psychological processes, i.e. essentially objective conditions, are the matrix and precipitating factors of student neuroses. For a long time, psychic casualties in students were not recognized as problems of their society, either by the general public or by those directly concerned. In a situation where the high-strung hopes evoked by the Paris May revolt have remained unfulfilled for the time

being, and where fathers are again successfully spanking their riotous sons, Mahler interprets the political fights and the generation-specific neuroses as production costs of a search for new ways of life which must be wrung from society.
