Questo lavoro mi è stato suggerito dalla maturazione di idee che, dapprima vissute come vaghe intuizioni fin dall'inizio della mia pratica psicoanalitica, si sono precisate in relazione a specifiche esperienze vissute coi pazienti.

In parte forse per una tendenza personale ed in parte probabilmente per il genere di pazienti che ho avuto l'occasione di trattare, ho sempre pensato (anche se più dubbioso all'inizio), che pur mantenendo quel distacco necessario a conservare l'obiettività, un certo grado di coinvolgimento di una parte della mia personalità nei conflitti e nelle difese del paziente fosse necessario sia per capire il malato sia per fornirgli un aiuto dinamicamente più efficace.
