The aims of this series of publications grew out of the thinking of the editors concerning the conditions necessary for the further growth of psychoanalysis as a science. Psychoanalysis and Contemporary Science was open to original clinical or theoretical contributions to psychoanalysis, scholarly surveys and historical reviews of important psychoanalytic concepts, papers on philosophy and philosophy of science, and clinical contributions that contained new observations and clearly distinguished these observations from theoretical elaborations. Psychoanalysis and Contemporary Science was hospitable to the full range of investigative methods used in the biological and behavioral sciences, including (for example) phenomenological and behavioral observation, cross-cultural comparisons, computer simulation, formal experiments, and statistical studies.
