termination. Self-ratings of change showed a moderate degree of improvement in their problems. Pre-treatment attitudes were linked with post-treatment self-ratings of improvement.

Nell'ultimo articolo della sezione (“Post-termination self-analysis and the relinquishment of the psychoanalytic frame: Thoughts on a fragment of self-analytic work following a traumatic termination”) Richard Zimmer si occupa degli aspetti della fine dell'analisi, avvenuta nel suo caso in modo traumatico, mostrando come questi si connettano alla dissoluzione dei legami simbiotici con l'analista e condividendo con il lettore come un intenso lavoro di autoanalisi, da lui svolto in seguito all'interruzione, si sia rivelato un impulso tanto per il consolidamento quanto per la rielaborazione dell'identificazione con l'analista – cosa che può consentire all'analizzando di sviluppare un modo di pensare al proprio inconscio diverso da quello dell'analista.
Richard Zimmer has recently presented his paper “Post-Termination Self-Analysis and the Relinquishment of the Psychoanalytic Frame: Thoughts on a Fragment of Self-Analytic Work following a Traumatic Termination” (Zimmer 2021), discussed by Fakhry Davids and Clara Nemas, and on 8 June John Steiner will present his paper “Mourning in Hamlet: Turning Ancestral Ghosts into Ancestors” (https://www.theijp.org/ijp-zoom-study-meetings/).

Like Gray (1990), he underscored the promotion of the analysand's self-analytic function throughout treatment as crucial for post-termination success, admitting that “It takes considerable analytic work before the patient can, for the most part, consistently view his thoughts as mental events” (p.
An outcome study of eight children aged 4 to 15 seen in 4x or 5x/week analysis (Hollinger and Galatzer-Levi forthcoming) found that at least at 2 years post termination, all were doing well, either as students or in their careers. All of them demonstrated “a high level of self-awareness and self-reflection.”
Post-termination, these functions need to be either dispensed with, internalized or assigned to other objects; (2) this reorganization may result in the establishment of a new self-analytic function, with its own method.
Post-Termination Self-Analysis - Some Clinical and Theoretical Considerations
Methodological Problems in the Study of Self-Analysis
The relative paucity of literature examining post-termination self-analysis is based more on inherent methodological problems than on lack of interest.
(2007) studied numerous possible clinical developments after the termination of psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy, and found that, of these, only self-analysis was positively correlated with continuing clinical improvement. Kantrowitz (2012), on the other hand, found that ongoing post-termination improvement was not necessarily contingent on either the development of a capacity for self-analysis or its ongoing practice.
It is in this third phase that I see phenomena analogous to the post-termination self-analysis that is the topic of this paper.
