In several of my works I have elaborated on this distinction between the murdered father and the dead father (e.g. Perelberg 2009, 2015). The passage from the narcissistic father to the law of the symbolic father establishes a link between the generations (Perelberg 2013).

This minimal ‘configuration’ would thus include four terms: consanguinity (between siblings); filiation (between parents and children); alliance (between the parents); and the avuncular system (or the representative of the mother’s group) (Lévi-Strauss, 1949; Berenstein, 1983; Perelberg, 1990, p. 42). The avuncular relationship is the expression of the incest taboo, which requires that in human society a man can only obtain a woman from another man ‘who gives him a daughter or a sister’ (Lévi-Strauss, 1986, p. 46) The maternal uncle (or a representative of the mother’s group) is thus, according to Lévi-Strauss, a precondition for the structure to exist.
