Simon Partridge Freelance writer who has covered several fields: community broadcasting (NOT the BBC/IBA: The Case for Community Radio, Comedia, 1982), devolved politics (Building a New Britain: An Alternative Approach to Devolution, Ed., City Region Campaign, 1996), the British-Irish conflict (Nordic Co-operation: A Possible Model for British-Irish Relations, Finnish Institute London, 1997), ethno-cultural mingling across our Isles (British Council Ireland, 2004-2005), and, more recently, the effects of boarding school and intergenerational war trauma.
For me it was a roller-coaster, re-experiencing pain (Partridge, 2007) sparked off by Vyvyen Brendon's numerous, well-documented, often first hand examples, followed by anger and outrage that this was allowed to go on for so long - and, as Brendon admits, still does, even if in less overtly brutal form.

Annie Power in her commentary (Power, 2007) on my own boarding school trauma (Partridge, 2007) suggests that family tradition and the ‘detachment’ already inculcated at home can soften the blow for the established upper class.

I have described elsewhere (Partridge, 2007, 2009, 2010) the devastating effects of the trauma of boarding (in my case from the age of 6), both in its complex aspects, as delineated by the pioneer trauma expert and therapist Judith Herman (1992, 2001), and in its acute forms.

John Bowlby's Last Interview—15th February, 1990
Discovering the Videotapes of John Bowlby's Last Interview
Simon Partridge Disillusioned ex-analysand of many years of orthodox psychoanalysis and a freelance writer.
But for me it was life-enhancing, finally helping to open a door out of what I later came to call “British upper-class complex trauma syndrome” (Partridge, 2011). Having discovered that Bowlby's social provenance was not so different from mine, I then wondered if he had said anything definitive about the effects of being sent off to boarding school at an early age (this was a regime to which my sister and I had been submitted from the age of six with traumatic consequences).
