This book is intended for the intelligent, non-professional and focuses on the compatibility between psychiatry and religion. It argues that since psychiatry is an empirical discipline, it is neutral with respect to religious ideas, yet can free men from superficial forms of religiosity. Thus, it can become a strong ally of a truly religious life. Its determinism explains the present in terms of the past, but not the future. Thus, it can be the basis for free choice, based on actual realistic conditions.—The book also gives an adequate account of various illnesses and of treatments.
