This thoughtful book treats briefly but perceptively basic critical concepts, in particular, the methodological categories involved in examining mental health and disease. The approach is couched in modest temper and the points made are admittedly tentative. Traditional psychoanalytic terminology is given fresh import by transposition into non-technical idioms and examples.
From the host of subjects touched on, one might single out the section on “Regression and Regeneration” in Part 2 as especially creative. The practitioner will find the section “The Therapeutic Action” particularly useful.
