This stimulating study, conducted with the help of the Mount Sinai Seminar Group, is a valuable contribution to the historical development and the present status of the psychosomatic area. It focuses on anorexia nervosa as a paradigmatic syndrome.
The editors' point of view is based on an operational approach “in which the structure and function of the psychic apparatus are also indicated as variables in health and disease.” This specifically rules out the view of the psychological as an isolated factor, as solely etiological or as a resut of an illness.
The book contains rich case material by John V. Waller, M. Ralph Kaufman, Felix Deutsch, Ruth Moulton, Sandor Lorand. Other contributors include Pierre Janet, Charcot, Victor V. Weizsacker, Jules H. Masserman, Franz Alexander.
