This volume brings the contributions of the Eranos-Jahrbuch of 1954 as well as two earlier essays by Heinrich Zimmer and G. van der Leeuw.
Mircea Eliade's paper on “Mystery and Spiritual Regeneration in Extra-European Religions” covers Australian cosmology and mythology, and the symbolism of initiatic death. Mystical Islam is treated by Fritz Meier, Ismailian Gnosis by Henry Corbin, Zen by D. T. Suzuki, ancient Byzantine mysticism by Jean Danielon, death and rebirth in the light of India by Heinrich Zimmer , immortality by G. Van Der Leeuw , Schelling's theogony by Ernst Benz, metamorphosis in animals by Adolf Portmann. Paul Tillich contributes an essay on “The Importance of New Being for Christian Theology.”—The stated aim of the Eranos Round Table was at first to mediate between East and West. The emphasis has since shifted to the Occidental heritage.
