The author draws an analogy between Stanislavsky's concepts of the “outer” and “inner” and the Freudian conscious and unconscious, with the “outer” including the ego and superego, and the “inner” combining the id and libido. The main body of this small study consists of a somewhat literal attempt to apply psychoanalytic insights to dramatic role playing.
The author makes a basically valid point: An actor's under standing of the character's unconscious drives must not be openly exposed to the audience. Persuasive acting consists in showing that these drives are as hidden from the actor as they are from the character he is portraying. H. S.
