Professor Holland provides a detailed and comprehensive summary of major and minor psychoanalytic examinations of Shakespeare. Part I is a brief sketch of Freud's views on art and the artist and Part II offers the author's view that the psychoanalytic approach gives a dynamic experience to the reading of Shakespeare. Part II, the bulk of the book, is a valuable and knowledgeable (if not altogether discriminating in its inclusion of third rate critics) restatement of psychoanalytic contributions to Shakespeare, the man and his works.
