This memorial to David Rapaport contains essays on those issues which characterize Rapaport's contributions to psychoanalytic theory and practice. Rapaport was among the last of the truly gifted exegesists of Freud, and his work did more than merely restate or reaffirm Freud's original formulations. As a philosopher of science as well as of psychology, he tried to establish psychoanalytic theory on a broader basis than metapsy-chology. He was the mentor and the inspiration to a large number of students and colleagues, some of whom appear in this volume.
