Editor's Note: Sanford Gifford's essays in this journal issue trace the passage of psychoanalysis from Europe to the United States. They reflect not only Gifford's years of dedication to exploring the intellectual and institutional history of psychoanalysis but also his deep personal commitment to and active participation in the development of psychoanalysis in Boston. The essays, published here for the first time, come from the Sanford Gifford Papers, 1955-2012, collected in the Archives of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (BPSI). Gifford wrote these papers to present initial research conclusions, generate discussion, and promote wider reflection. We have made only typographical corrections and adjusted the formatting and references for the journal. The BPSI Archives provided photographs to accompany the essays.
