It is my honor and privilege to introduce Tony Kris. Tony, affectionately, also referred to as Anton by his older son, is a man of many talents. Most of you here know about him through his writings, executive skills, and drafting our by-laws. More of this shortly. But you may not know that he is also an excellent baker—all the more amazing because he never even tastes his fabulous creations. Moreover, his cooking talent is not restricted to baking. Eating at Tony's, one can count on an entire meal that is delectable—ending with homemade sorbet—the secret of its success he will quickly tell you is in a little egg white—and then there is the superb expresso, ahh the crema!
Tony serves very successfully as an informal mentor and editor to colleagues, friends and family. He always has his eye on what and how others can do to be most fully and effectively themselves. Lunch with Tony in his lovely sunny kitchen has comforted and also facilitated the growth of many people over the years. His generosity and kindness are known to all those who have turned to him. In addition, Tony has actively promoted younger colleagues. He not only recommended many to be junior associates on JAPA but also convinced the editor of the International Journal to begin a similar program and then made many nominations there as well. But Tony also knows and will directly state his limits. “I'm no good at looking at second drafts;” “I've told you all I know about... [whatever it is];” “Someone else would be a better supervisor for this kind of patient.” The last may be undue modesty, for Tony is a master clinician and consultant. With his skilled ears, he follows patients' and colleagues' associations and after a few interventions or questions, he illuminates blind spots.
Tony is also a loyal and caring friend. With the same devotion and energy that he gives professionally, he is there for his friends and family. To be Tony's friend is to know that wise,
