We are now in the process of completing our first decade of evolution and growth as a Clinic. This has been a period of exciting progress. Growth has been our vital quality. To grow and keep on growing is essential
if we want to meet the challenge of existence. Now, in our tenth year, we are still young in our energy and impetus to move ahead and try what is new, to look for change, to improve and even to face and attain the unprecedented.
As we begin the tenth year of the Karen Horney Clinic's existence, we may be impressed by the total accomplishment of fulfilling our role. When the Clinic began to function in May of 1955, the annual budget was $ 38,700 and the medical staff consisted of forty-eight doctors. Today, the Clinic's annual operating budget is almost $ 165,000, with a projection for the next fiscal year of almost $ 200,000, and the staff of physicians totals seventy. When we opened our doors in 1955, we had one part-time psychiatric caseworker; today we have four part-time psychiatric caseworkers, one full-time psychologist, and one part-time psychologist. The Clinic's growth has correspondingly been reflected in the number of patients served. During the year 1955, we provided services of all kinds to three hundred patients. Last year, including intensive treatment, short-term consultations, and individuals served without formal application, seventeen hundred persons were assisted.
During the calendar year of 1963, there were a total of fifteen thousand three hundred seventy professional staff hours provided. This included the professional time of doctors, the psychiatric caseworkers and the psychologists. During the eleven months of 1963, there were a total of twelve hundred fifty-nine telephone inquiries for assistance at the reception desk.
As we approach the completion of the Clinic's first decade, it is of interest to point out our developments. Beginning as an adult psychoanalytic clinic, we added a service to children which was made possible by a
