The year 1965-1966 had special significance for us as the twenty-fifth year of our existence. It was a year marked by celebration, productiveness and growth. An Anniversary Dinner-Dance held in conjunction with the American Institute for Psychoanalysis at the Hotel Pierre was a delightfully successful mixture of warmth, nostalgia and merriment. It was capped off with an address by Dr. Harold Kelman (published in the Vol. 26, No. 15 of The American Journal of Psychoanalysis) summarizing our history, growth and the accomplishments in which we can take so much justifiable pride.
Our anniversary was further celebrated in a two-day symposium on “The Changing Image of Man: A Challenge to Psychoanalysis” at the Carnegie Endowment International Center (Dr. Frederick A. Weiss, Chairman). The papers which are now published in our Journal included: “The Changing Image of Man”: “The Biological Aspect” by Dr. Geoffrey F. Osler, “The Philosophical Aspect” by Dr. Maurice Friedman, “The Psychological Aspect” by Dr. Abraham H. Maslow, and the “Socio-Cultural Aspect” by Dr. Harold D. Lasswell; “The Changing Image of Psychoanalysis”: Drs. Harold Kelman, Frederick A. Weiss, and Antonia Wenkart, with discussion by Dr. Leon Salzman; “Changing Concepts of the Growth Process” by Dr. Jack L. Rubins; “The Changing Image of Mental Health and Mental Illness” by Dr. Alexander R. Martin; “The Changing Image of Sex” by Dr. Harry Gershman; “The Changing Concept of Goals in Therapy” by Dr. Ralph Slater; “The Changing Image of the Analytic Relationship” by Dr. Sara Sheiner; and “The Changing Role of Psychoanalysis in the Clinic” by Dr. Louis R. Hott. The program was so well attended that the auditorium facilities had to be expanded.
The Program Committee (Dr. Melvin Boigon, Chairman) presented a most variegated and interesting series of scientific lectures at The New York Academy of Medicine: “The Diagnosis and Treatment of Marital Conflicts”—Drs. Paul Lussheimer, Robert W. Laidlaw, Clifford J. Sager,
