The Karen Horney Clinic continues to be effective in treating the whole person in relationship to his total environment through psychoanalytic methods.
The Clinic has passed an experimental stage in its development, with all its participating organizations having gone through a process of gradual mutual acceptance and respect. All are concerned with the Clinic's welfare, and by unity and cooperation of all of these participating organizations, an atmosphere of scientific and therapeutic freedom in the Clinic has evolved. This will help our patients, ourselves, and our institution.
The Clinic staff of psychoanalysts, social workers and psychologists offered a total of 21,673 hours of service this past year. This was a 23% increase over last year in the amount of time devoted to helping patients.
Three hundred thirty patients received active therapy. This represented an over-all increase of 10% with a 13% increase for adults, and .06% for children.
Another 2,640 patients were also helped during the previous year. Telephone calls were received from 1,920 people requesting help. Help offered included consultations, individual, group, family and child programs and services. Patients made over 18,000 visits since May, 1966.
Adults comprised 59% of all the patients treated; of these 37% were males within the average range of 17 to 46 years. There has been a gradual increase in patients who are semi-skilled, and we now find that 30% of our total clinic population is in this group.
Requests for applications to the Clinic have averaged 35 to 40 per week. Applications mailed in response to these requests get over a 38% return.
The annual budget was $350,000. Of this amount, one half was paid through patients'p fees and government funds. The remaining half is met by private donations sponsored by the Board of Directors.
The Clinic supervisory program has been coordinated by Dr. Isadore Portnoy with regular meetings of the Clinic supervisory staff. When necessary for Institute supervisi
