The Karen Homey Clinic has reached a peak in its evolution where it now continues to function in the two main areas first established during our inception. We have an effective ongoing adult psychoanalytic program in one department, and a community therapeutic service in a second division.
In the adult psychoanalytic department, psychoanalysis is carried out in the tradition endorsed by the American Institute for Psychoanalysis. Candidates and other medical staff members practice psychoanalysis; they also utilize clinic patients for Institute supervision by the former.
In the community therapeutic service division, programs are operating to its maximum capacity, and new programs are being considered for the future.
The staff of psychoanalysts, social workers and psychologists gave a total of 23, 121 hours of service this past year. This was an increase of 7% over last year.
The number of patients in active treatment was 404, with 65% of these female. One hundred patients were rejected after screening. Ninety-three received consultation without formal application. Fifty-eight are in “process” at the Clinic now. Thirty-two patients are present in the Single-Mothers West Side Program. Twenty-six are active in the Elderly West Side Project. We had 1,600 requests for applications with 40% return. There were 12,447 interviews with or about patients, and 776 interviews with others not on the rolls. This included all screenings, family contacts and contacts with other interested people.
The staff consists of 71 doctors, with 13 additional candidates appointed to the Clinic. There are 7 full-time social workers, with 2 trainees from The Hunter College and 2 from Columbia College Schools of Social Work. Two part-time psychologists, 2 part-time social workers and one fourth-year medical student completed our rolls.
The annual budget was over $350,000, and was met by patients' fees, government funds and private donations.
