The year of 1969-70 was a year of difficulty, change, transition and consolidation. After a group of dissident members of the Association withdrew from the faculty of the American Institute for Psychoanalysis and the medical staff of the Karen Horney Clinic, a petition was submitted to the Executive Council to remove the dissidents from the Editorial Board of The American Journal of Psychoanalysis. A Special Business Meeting was called on October 21, 1969, and with the full voting membership represented in person or by proxy, the petition was passed with the necessary two-thirds majority. After the formal removal of the dissidents from the Editorial Board, the following temporary appointments were immediately made with the approval of the Executive Council: Dr. Helen De Rosis, Edltor; Dr. Benjamin Becker, Managing Editor; Dr. Antonia Wenkart, Associate Editor; and Dr. Sidney Rosen, Assistant Managing Editor.
Subsequently, a number of other changes were made in the staff and policy of the Journal: An Editorial Committee, consisting of Drs. Alexander Reid Martin, Theodore I. Rubin, Jack L. Rubins and Bella S. Van Bark, was appointed to establish a wider base of responsibility for the material selected. In addition, Drs. Francis J. Braceland, Henry W. Brosin, Judd Marmor and Leon Salzman were invited to serve as members of a new Advisory Committee in order to broaden and deepen the scope of our Journal.
Our Program Committee (Dr. Bella S. Van Bark, Chairman) arranged for six Academy and two Interval meetings. The stimulating and well-attended scientific meetings at the New York Academy of Medicine included “Character Types in Marital Disharmony,” by Dr. Martin Symonds, discussants, Drs. Sidney Langer and Ian Alger; “Spatiality — A Concern for the Psychoanalyst,” by Dr. Antonia Wenkart, discussants, Drs. Bella S. Van Bark and Jay Shulman; “Psychoanalysis and Religion,” by Dr. Arnaldo Apolito, discussants, Drs. Jack L. Rubins and Abraham N. Franzblau; “The Later Years,” by
