In Psychoanalysis and Women, Jean Baker Miller has collected, edited, and commented on a selection of papers written by distinguished and diverse psychoanalysts that examine and explore the “true psychological nature of women.”
The book is divided into three sections. The first, entitled “Early Innovators,” begins with two early papers of Karen Horney, “The Flight From Womanhood” and “The Problem of Feminine Masochism.” There follows a paper on “Sex” by Alfred Adler and three papers by Clara Thompson: “Penis Envy in Women,” “Cultural Pressures in the Psychology of Women,” and “Some Effects of the Derogatory Attitude Towards Female Sexuality.”
