Our dear friend and colleague, Leon Gottfried, passed away on September 17, 1978.
He and I both joined the Institute in 1947. During these 30 years I learned how supportive and loyal he could be. A keen observer with an open mind in the field of psychoanalysis, Leon was well-versed in philosophy, sociology, and politics. While attending and participating in psychiatric conventions all over the world, Leon served as an expositor and defender of Horney's theories. His long career and study of psychoanalytic theory and practice began when he was a young man in his home town of Vienna, where he attended a seminar conducted by Freud.
Leon was a kindly and gentle fellow who was rarely heard to express a harsh or vindictive word about any of his fellow colleagues. There was a cheerful friendliness about him that was ever refreshing. Producing a harmonious blend of personal characteristics with his professionalism, he stood as a model for us. We have all lost a good friend and one who was able to follow the principle of free choice in many of the decisions of his life.
