The loss of Louis R. Hott deeply grieved those who knew him. He was a man dedicated to his work and devoted to his friends and family.
A graduate of Long Island University in 1932 and the University of Bern, Switzerland, Medical School in 1937, Dr. Hott took his residency in neurosurgery at Kennedy General Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, from 1943 to 1944 and Nichols General Hospital, Louisville, Kentucky, from 1944 to 1945. He served in the Army Medical Corps from 1940 to 1946 and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was a resident in Psychiatry from 1948 to 1950 at Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital and became Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1952. He was certified as a psychoanalyst in 1957 and wrote widely in the field of psychiatry and psychoanalysis.
Dr. Hott served as Medical Director of the Karen Horney Clinic from 1960 to 1979, was Assistant Clinical Professor at the Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University; Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine; Clinical Psychiatrist and Attending Supervisory Psychiatrist at Bellevue and University Hospitals. At the time of his death, Dr. Hott was Assistant Dean, Member of the Board of Trustees, and Training and Supervising Analyst at the American Institute for psychoanalysis.
We have lost a loyal colleague who gave unstintingly of himself to insure our growth and development as an Institute and Clinic. The future of the American Institute for Psychoanalysis and the Karen Horney Clinic is richly endowed because of the energy and commitment with which he served. We will miss his optimistic spirit, his warm generosity, and profound wisdom.
