I view this engagement between Antokoletz's work and my critique of it as a moment in a larger debate between modern (structuralist) and postmodern (poststructuralist) perspectives, which has entered psychoanalytic discourse after significantly
contributing to knowledge production across a range of other diciplines. I find my own position unrecognizably represented in Antokoletz's letter, and rather than rehearse here what I have presented as carefully as I can in a text that already miniaturizes a complex argument, I invite readers to review my brief essay (this journal, 53: 103-108, 1993), so that they can make their own evaluation of the issues at stake and the validity of my analysis and interpretation of Antokoletz's paper (this journal, 53: 35-54, 1993).
