From the Editor: A Note of Farewell and Welcome

With this issue, I conclude nine happy years as Editor of The American Journal of Psychoanalysis. I gratefully acknowledge the editorial freedom provided by the officers of the Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis during my tenure, with a special note of thanks to Milton Berger without whose encouragement I would not have undertaken this position.

The wise counsel of the Associate Editors Edward Clemmens and Joyce Lerner ensured that my reach extended far, but not toward the altogether fanciful. Through my editorship I have had the good fortune of finding in Robin Goldberg a reliable, scholarly, and conscientious Book Review Editor. Similarly, the several Scientific Meetings Editors who have served during this period—Michael J. Hurewitz, Joan Gross, Betsy Hallerman, and Gayle Lewis—helped in bringing to our readership the vitality of programs sponsored by the Association and the American Institute for Psychoanalysis. The diligence and care of our Managing Editors, most immediately and most particularly, Joanna Macias, guaranteed that I was spared the seemingly endless paperwork, phone calls, and faxing that journal editing entails. Likewise, the staff at Kluwer Academic/Human Sciences Press deserves ample commendation for its competent attention to the larger picture, as well as to the necessary punctilios of editing, design, and scheduling—I especially thank Carol Bischoff, Robert Darnowsky, and Vicky Valenzuela. I am indebted for the often painstaking care in refereeing manuscripts freely given by members of the Editorial Board, the Advisory Board, and numerous other scholars who generously gave of their expertise and wisdom. Finally, my appreciation to the editors of special issues, special sections, and to the many contributors—the living heart of the journalistic enterprise—who have entrusted the fruits of their effort to our hands.
