I am thrilled to have been chosen to be the new editor of The American Journal of Psychoanalysis by the members of The Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis. I am grateful for their trust and am enormously proud to be following a succession of great editors, starting with Karen Horney.
As the seventh person filling this role in sixty years, my greatest wish is to maintain the high standards of my predecessors. At this time of transition of editorial responsibility the words of Horace, “aliusque et idem,” different yet the same, come to my mind.
I pledge that the journal will continue to offer you what you have come to expect: talented writers bringing you their best ideas and reflecting the vitality of psychoanalysis. I will continue the work handed down by my predecessors, two of whom, Drs. Doug Ingram and Mario Rendon have made themselves generously available to assist with the transition. I am fortunate to have received the pledge of uninterrupted support from an excellent editorial board as well. Future issues will reflect the views of the newly formed North American and International Editorial Boards on the theoretical and practical worlds of psychoanalysis.
The current issue on The Traumatized Adolescent is an excellent example of the direction and the expanded scope of my thinking. The topic of trauma is especially close to my heart, and I hope to see more work addressing it. Adolescents are seldom written about in psychoanalytic journals; putting the focus on them in this issue symbolizes my wish to expand into new areas of psychoanalysis. I would like to invite my psychoanalytic colleagues from all over the world to be part of this vital journal, as we continue to offer contemporary perspectives on theory and treatment, and continue to maintain our commitment to innovative ideas. The future work of the journal will be informed by the past and the present, by those who worked before, and by those who continue to work with us.
