Stern gives a powerful narrative describing the run-up to what the Boston Change Process Study Group calls a “now” moment with his client, a moment that demands the utmost authenticity from the therapist. In response to his client's question ‘Can I be a good mother?’, he found himself telling the story of Feli the goose, Konrad Lorenz's famous experiment of raising a goose in isolation from other geese and Feli's subsequent traumatic social development where she was unable to raise goslings but was, finally, able to parent ducklings. An exceptionally moving account, illustrating the deep connections between attachment and relationality.
