Kitsen establishes continuities between poetry and the action of psychotherapy by looking at poems as dream-work, the representing of experience through symbolization, condensation, and displacement. As opposed to prose, which is linked to declarative memory and the stability of self, poetry communicates moments of being, a non-verbal memory. Presenting both clients' poems and her own, Kitsen extends the poetic dimension of psychotherapeutic work.
