This paper seeks to explore the way in which we may understand and touch the deep structures of the mind and how we may work effectively with the relational patterning of an individual that is stored in implicit memory. The author discusses the early making of mind and the rich symbolic process of coming more fully into mind that may occur in the consulting-room. The author stresses relational dynamics as crucial to the process of forming a robust therapeutic attachment that will enable such growth and development. The clinical illustration is from work with two patients with very different attachment styles, each of whom lost her father suddenly at the age of six years.
