The author reviews the state of play of research into possible genetic factors in schizophrenia. The author contrasts the different cultures of psychiatry and psychotherapy and, through a critical examination of the social defeat protocol model of depression in mice, argues that psychotherapists have little to learn from these studies. There remains the possibility of useful medication arising from knowledge of the molecular biology of the mechanism of action of psychotropic medication.
