The author describes his experience both during and after clinical training and the resulting subjective conflict based on an external reality to comply with classical psychoanalytic thinking. The author questions the lack of development of traditional psychoanalytic approaches and also the efficacy of transference and countertransference within the classical analytic frame. Furthermore, he considers whether a parting between contemporary/relational psychotherapy and classical paradigms may now be appropriate.
