This article is a reflective account of long-term work with a male client, whose use of sexual excitement (a re-enactment of early relational trauma) was continually in the forefront of the clinical engagement. The author illustrates the relational vicissitudes and complexities between one client, one therapist and at times a much-stretched relationship. The author explores the relational dilemmas and opportunities in clinical work, when faced with the repeated and ongoing demands of working relationally with sexuality, attachment dynamics and early relational trauma: the client's, our own, and the relational mix. The article illustrates how developmental shifts in the client, were only possible as a result of profound shifts in the psyche and reflective processes of the therapist.
