This paper discusses, with clinical material, the interplay between attachment theory and transference concepts and considers how one framework broadens understanding of the other in contemporary clinical settings. Although recent attachment research has deepened our understanding of transference, and research into countertransference variables has clarified this construct, the paper underlines the importance in training programmes of mediation between empirical definition and clinical practice.
