Harnessing every opportunity to help turn children's lives around, especially those who have experienced chronic developmental trauma, can have lasting impacts on the child and their future children. This paper explores how the context in which the trauma is experienced (interpersonally) and the child's protective responses (dissociation) to the need to accommodate the wishes and behaviours of the abusive adult, can provide a theoretical and interventional model to assist in the provision of therapeutic care for looked after children. It also explores how the ‘enabling organization culture’ can be harnessed to ensure optimal outcomes are attained.
