In 1985, Dr. John Bowlby wrote an eleven-page paper reminiscing about his psychoanalytical colleagues from the 1930s and 1940s. Hitherto unpublished, we now present Bowlby's essay “Notes on Members of the British Psychoanalytical Society: 1935-1945”, with an introduction and editorial notes which elaborate upon some of the more obscure references. Bowlby's paper provides not only a rare glimpse into the lives and characteristics of some of the foundational figures in the British psychoanalytical movement, but it also offers an insight into aspects of Bowlby's own personality, ranging from his admiration and appreciation of significant colleagues, to his more dismissive treatment of some of the early members who left, perhaps, a less visible legacy to the mental health profession.
