The paper uses an attachment perspective to explore the impact of early boarding. Alongside the familiar attachment patterns, this article identifies sub groups of young boarders who appear to develop very specific defensive strategies. Case examples are given for two of these sub-groups: “boarding rebels” and “underperformers”. Cultural and social class aspects of boarding are explored including the hypo-cognition of emotion in families which have a tradition of sending children to board at seven.
