In this paper, I try to capture some of my experience of setting up and facilitating a long-term therapeutic writing group for service users in a community mental health setting. I have found myself drawing on attachment theory repeatedly over the two year period to underpin my practice and to help me keep going through the inevitable difficulties. I focus especially on the story of this project, and on the fundamental role that attachments have played. I note specific developments in the writings produced by group members over time and suggest that these may be representations of internal change. I also give a brief overview of the current status of writing as one of the arts-based therapies and of the ongoing discourse around its evolution as a safe and effective therapeutic option.
