Applying theory to mothering practice: two artists explore in conversation transformative processes triggered by self-visualisation of mother—child relational space. Discussing memories of the encounter with the self-as-image, in video recordings which were made as part of the practitioners artistic self-reflective and investigative processes, but which also derive from early parenting compulsion to record and preserve the fleeting and forever changing moments of a child's early life, the speakers describe and interrogate the reason for the subsequent viewing of the recordings having such significant impact on their sense of self as mothers.
Using everyday discourse, and based on transcripts of two conversations, which are informed by the artist's working knowledge of representation, visualisation, and creative reflection, their similar personal and intimate transformation is interrogated to reveal the workings of attachment theory and Winnicottian principles of “the good enough” mother in the everyday.
