This year's John Bowlby Memorial Conference, to be held on the 4th and 5th April 2014, will be on the theme “Couples and Attachment”. Inspired by the topic, I would like to share a review of a book on attachment and love written by a psychiatrist and neuroscientist Amir Levine and a psychologist Rachel Heller.
If you are interested in attachment theory and couple work, it is a very good introduction. It is well-written, well-organised and easy to read. It can also be useful if you are working with clients who struggle in their own relationships or if you are working with couples. The authors outline guidelines for:
Understanding our own attachment style.1
Recognising the attachment styles of others.
Responding to other attachment styles in ways that help obtain more desirable outcomes (without being confused).
