This article was originally written for a presentation at the 2009 Bowlby Conference entitled Desire Derailed: Attachment, Deprivation and the Emergence of Love, Joy and Vitality. It presents the author's autobiographical reflections on the conference themes. Drawing on her experience of nursing, research and psychotherapy with a range of adult client groups, including people with dementia and people approaching death, the qualities of “being” and presence are posited as key factors in enabling the emergence of love, joy and vitality through moments of meeting.
