This paper, originally presented at the UKCP Supervision Conference in March 2013, explores the idea of “relational supervision”. What does it mean to supervise, or be supervised from, a relational stance as a psychotherapy practitioner? What are the challenges of relational supervision, what are its main tenets, and what prevents supervisors and supervisees from adopting a relational stance to both clinical work and supervision? The role of the “psychoanalytic superego” is explored in the light of the historical “supervision trauma” transmitted to later generations of psychoanalytic practitioners by the ruptured supervisory relationship between Freud and Ferenczi.
