This article first appeared in December 1990 in an issue of the Journal of The Institute for Self Analysis, which was entitled On Attachment, Commemorating the Work of John Bowlby. It is an account of how John Southgate first met John Bowlby and then became his supervisee in the last two years of Bowlby's life. There are detailed descriptions of his sessions with Bowlby and how they discussed together many important clinical issues.
