It was a great pleasure and privilege to have been asked to transcribe the final interview given by Dr John Bowlby, a man who has influenced much of my academic, professional, and personal life. The interview was video recorded at the Tavistock Institute and Clinic in London on 15th February 1990, and was conducted by Virginia Hunter for her book Psychoanalysts Talk. The book however, did not contain the full interview transcript. Twenty-five years later I was given both a DVD of this recording and Hunter's original transcript, and given the task of amalgamating both in order to create a complete narrative of Bowlby's last ever interview. As psychotherapists, there is lively debate as to whether our role is that of “pattern maker” or “pattern finder”, and during this endeavour I found myself being both! I thoroughly enjoyed this task, and learned a great deal about clinical research, theory, and practice, as well as about Bowlby himself.
