Frances Sommer Anderson, PhD, SEP searched the psychoanalytic literature in 1979 while learning to treat Dr John E. Sarno's pain patients at the Rusk Institute-NYU Langone Medical Center. She resonated with Winnicott and Krystal. McDougall became a cherished mentor and consultant who encouraged her to write. While an advanced psychoanalytic candidate, Lewis Aron invited her to co-edit Relational Perspectives on the Body (Analytic Press, ), a groundbreaking volume bringing the body back into the psychoanalytic consulting room. In Bodies in Treatment: The Unspoken Dimension , Anderson wrote about a thirty-year period of being an analysand who was simultaneously experiencing bodywork adjunctively. She discovered that the origin of her chronic headaches could be traced to pre-, peri-, and post-natal trauma. Pursuing advanced trauma training, she certified in 2011 as a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner. With Eric Sherman, PsyD, she co-authored Pathways to Pain Relief (Amazon Digital Platform, ).
Dr Anderson was invited to focus on treating chronic pain in the 22nd Bowlby Memorial Lecture in 2015. Presenting three clinical cases, she demonstrated how she incorporates research on the neuroscience of attachment, pain, and trauma. She was invited to present clinical case material at the American Psychosomatic Society conference on early adversity and pain (October 2016). At the 3rd Columbia University Psychosomatic Conference on reversing early life adversity (October 2017), she presented a clinical case to illustrate how she integrates relational psychoanalysis and Somatic Experiencing® trauma techniques to treat chronic physical pain. Her experiential and didactic workshop will focused on treating somatic pain memories. E-mail:
