This article evolved as life events called me to think seriously about my place, both personally and professionally, as someone who, much as I would like to deny it, is getting older. It was written, supported by rich discussion with older friends and colleagues, with the aim of prompting discussion about what it means to be an “elder” in our communities and in our work. More specifically I wanted to explore how, as psychotherapists, we can use the wisdom gained through many years of personal therapy, training, and clinical work to help others to navigate a rapidly changing, troubled world. My writing has been guided by questions such as: How have my views about the project of psychotherapy changed over time? What have difficult life experiences taught me that I now bring to the work? And have my priorities changed because of all that I have experienced inside and outside the consulting room? I offer these questions to my readers.
