Film is a short movie written by Samuel Beckett in 1964. Thirty years earlier, Beckett had interrupted his psychoanalytic treatment with Bion, considering it essentially useless, even though an interest in psychiatry and psychoanalysis would accompany him for the rest of his life. Didier Anzieu hypothesizes that the emotional and intellectual resonances activated by the encounter between the two of them may have stimulated an exploration of similar themes in both, though in different arenas. Film is presented as an extraordinary visual narration of a paranoid nightmare: external reality appears to the protagonist as a universe populated by threatening eyes from which to protect himself. The eye, the expelled perception, infuses reality with copies/fragments of what has been broken up and evacuated outside of himself. Utilizing the Bionian concept of «attacks on linking», the author suggests a reading of the film as an illustration of a mental universe dominated by psychotic processes and psychotic functioning.
