In this paper I have tried to show the connection value of the concept of developmental transference between the two different psychoanalytic traditions - Freudian and relational in a broad sense - illustrating its connection with the patient's need for love and with the analyst's loving function. By loving function I have understood the analyst's ability to attune to and resonate fully with the patient's need of love in its various components, and to respond to this need, focusing on the close link that exists between primary love, holding, reverie, loving function, and models of attachment to primary objects.
