Any discipline that aspires to stand the test of time must necessarily ask itself how the foundations of its knowledge can be handed down to new generations. For psychoanalysis, a discipline that combines a refined and complex theoretical edifice with experiential knowledge imbued with affection and sensoriality, this is a considerable challenge. Reflecting on the contribution by Angelika Staehle (2021), which retraces the vicissitudes within the IPA of training standards from 1925 until today, one has the impression that the transmission of psychoanalytic knowledge continues to be a challenge. Progressive undermining of many certainties on which psychoanalysis was originally founded, together with a need to meet the demands of today's world and its ever-changing and complex requests for treatment, means that psychoanalysis must constantly find a balance between tradition and innovation.
