In this paper, the author reflects on the use of electronic devices within analytic sessions during the treatment of a child on the autism spectrum. Two specific qualities of electronic devices are identified: the capacity to immerse oneself in a flow of images, and the experience of sensory containment provided by the screen. Drawing on Anzieu, these characteristics are compared to the qualities the psychic envelope must possess in order to shield the self from excessive internal and external stimuli, while also supporting the formation of images that serve the alpha function. By silently watching the images alongside the patient, the analyst accepts the role of background-object, with the aim of offering her reverie to the patient. In situations where there is a deficit in representational capacity, this process can enable the patient to progress toward the symbolic register.
