The impact that Joan Fleming exerted on the process and understanding of psychoanalytic education was wide and deep. Her clear and incisive study and exposition of this topic has stimulated thoughtful responses and comparisons among educators in psychoanalytic institutes within, as well as outside of, the American Psychoanalytic Association.
Our invitation to submit papers for the Fleming Memorial Volume X of this Annual resulted in many interesting and significant contributions, both at home and abroad. The experiences and ideas of our international colleagues, which are presented together here, serve as a further tribute to the memory and work of an energetic and creative educator. These papers also demonstrate that the issues which Joan Fleming addressed involve multiple levels of complexity and conflict which are characteristic of human mental functioning in general and for which a psychoanalytic perspective offers unique insights. They also demonstrate that many issues in psychoanalytic education are independent of cultural or geographic boundaries.
This section helps us remember a friend and colleague who spent much of her professional life immersed in applying psychoanalytic understanding and insights to the problems of psychoanalytic education itself.
